Your Wheels Are the Foundation of Every Ride
There is no component on your bicycle that affects ride quality more than your wheels. They are the contact point between your effort and the road, transferring every watt of power and absorbing every bump in the trail. When they are out of alignment, even the most expensive bike can feel sluggish and unstable. At Gettysburg Bicycle & Fitness, we understand the physics of the wheel. We know that a persistent wobble or a loose spoke is not just an annoyance. It is a performance thief and a safety hazard. That is why we offer comprehensive wheel services designed to keep your rolling stock in excellent condition.
Our approach to wheel work is thorough and precise. We do not just tighten spokes until the wheel looks straight. We strike a balance to support long-term durability. Whether you are riding a rugged mountain bike on the rocks of Michaux State Forest or a sleek road bike on the smooth pavement of Adams County, we have the tools and the touch to handle your needs. Our service menu includes everything from basic truing and hub overhauls to complete, from-scratch custom wheel builds. We treat every wheel that goes into our truing stand with the same care we would want on our own race bikes.

Wheel Services We Offer
We service every type of wheel found in the cycling world. Whether you are on a carbon fiber race wheelset, a heavy-duty e-bike rim, or a standard aluminum commuter wheel, our technicians have the expertise to service it. We work with standard quick-release hubs, modern thru-axles, and boost spacing standards commonly found on brands such as Trek, Yeti, and Pivot.
We also understand that modern wheels require specific care, particularly with the rise of tubeless systems and disc brakes. We can handle the messy jobs, such as sealant installation, and the technical jobs, like rotor alignment, so you don't have to. We stock high-quality components from reputable brands like WTB, Bontrager, and Industry Nine, ensuring that any replacement part we install meets our standards for durability and performance.

We Build and Repair as We Ride
Wheel building is an art form that requires a blend of mechanical engineering knowledge and tactile experience. At Gettysburg Bicycle & Fitness, our wheel services are backed by decades of experience in riding and racing. Our owner, Jes Stith, and our staff have spent years competing in events like the Michaux Endurance Series, where wheels are subjected to punishing terrain. We know firsthand that a well-built wheel can be the difference between a podium finish and a long walk back to the trailhead.
We bring a rider’s mindset to the service bench. When we build a wheel, we are not just assembling parts; we are creating a complex system. We are developing a robust system designed to meet the unique needs of your riding style. We collaborate with premium component manufacturers, such as Industry Nine, WTB, and Bontrager, to deliver builds that offer superior engagement, lighter weight, and enhanced durability compared to stock options. Whether you need a bombproof enduro wheelset or a lightweight climbing set, we keep you rolling with confidence.

Wobbly Wheel? We’ve Got You.
A true wheel is a safe wheel. If you notice your brake pads rubbing, feel a vibration at speed, or hear the ping of a loose spoke, do not ignore it. Wheel issues tend to compound quickly. A single loose spoke can lead to a warped rim that becomes permanently damaged. Bring your wheel to Gettysburg Bicycle for an honest assessment.
We will inspect your rim, spokes, and hub to determine the best course of action. Whether it is a simple tension adjustment or a recommendation for a new rim, we provide clear, professional advice. We are here to ensure that your bike rolls as efficiently as possible, so you can focus on the ride, not the rattle.
FAQS
FAQ: Wheel Services
How long does a wheel true take?
The time required to true a wheel varies depending on the severity of the warp and the shape of the components, but we aim for a quick turnaround whenever possible, so you can get back to riding. A simple lateral true, correcting a slight side-to-side wobble, is a standard procedure our mechanics can often complete efficiently. At the same time, we focus on doing it correctly, not simply getting it to look straight. Proper truing involves balancing tension across all spokes and stress-relieving the wheel so that it stays true after riding.
If the wheel has a broken spoke or a damaged nipple, the process takes longer. We must source the correct spoke length and gauge, install it, and then bring the wheel back up to proper tension and alignment. That often requires removing the tire, tube, and rim tape to access the spoke bed and complete the repair cleanly.
For more complex issues, such as a flat spot (radial hop) or a seized nipple due to corrosion, we may require additional time to work on the wheel without causing further damage. When you drop off your wheel, we will inspect it, explain our findings, and provide a realistic time estimate based on the wheel's condition and our current service queue. Our goal is simple: keep you rolling as soon as possible, with work that holds up.
Do you service tubeless setups?
Absolutely. Tubeless technology has become the standard for mountain biking and gravel riding, and it is also gaining popularity on the road. We can handle all aspects of tubeless maintenance and setup. If you want to convert standard wheels to tubeless, we can install the necessary rim tape, tubeless valves, and sealant, provided your rims and tires are tubeless-ready. We stock quality sealants and components from brands like WTB and Bontrager to help create a reliable seal.
Tubeless maintenance can be messy and frustrating at home, especially when a tire bead is stubborn or sealant has dried out inside the tire. We deal with those situations regularly. We can refresh sealant, replace clogged valves, and diagnose slow leaks to ensure your setup remains dependable.
While our service menu lists' Install Tube,' we are equally comfortable removing tubes and setting you up for the puncture protection and lower-pressure benefits that tubeless tires can provide. If you are riding a mountain bike in Michaux State Forest, tubeless tires are often a smart choice because they help reduce pinch flats on rocky terrain. If you are unsure whether your wheels are compatible, we can inspect them and explain the best next step for your riding.
What if my wheel is badly bent?
If your wheel has suffered a significant impact, it may be bent beyond the point where truing is effective or safe. Metal, especially aluminum, has a fatigue limit and a kind of memory. If a rim is bent too far, forcing it back into alignment with spoke tension can create uneven tension across the wheel. That uneven tension can weaken the wheel and make it more prone to failure, which is why safety is our top priority in our recommendations. When you bring in a wheel that is badly bent, we start with a thorough inspection. We look for structural issues, such as cracks, creases, or severe warping, that indicate the rim is compromised. If we determine the rim cannot be repaired safely, we will be direct with you and recommend replacement instead of pushing a repair that will not last. In many cases, we can still save your hub and build it into a new rim, which can be more cost-effective than purchasing an entirely new wheel. We carry replacement rims and can source parts through our partners when needed. If a rebuild is the best path, we will explain what that means, what parts are required, and why it is the safer option. Our priority remains the same: ensuring you ride equipment that is reliable, stable, and safe.
